A smooth, flat asphalt ride that allows you to discover the town's railroad history (and present), the Cheektowaga Historic Rails to Trails is a community asset for Cheektowaga, a Buffalo suburb. About 1.5 miles of trail are built next to an active rail line on the site of the former Lehigh Valley Railroad, which hauled coal from Pennsylvania up to Buffalo and Lake Erie, making this rail-with-trail a hotspot for railroad buffs.
About the Route
Leaving off from the western trailhead on Medina St., the Cheektowaga Historic Rails to Trails, runs north and east through a wooded corridor before reaching the rail-with-trail section of the trail. For the next 1.5 miles, the trail parallels an active rail line, although at a wide berth. This section of the trail also passes Wrazen and Raymond Parks.
This route continues until reaching Union Rd. where the trail turns south. Technically, the western end of the trail is located here, but a sidewalk route can take trail users to the nearby Stiglmeier Park, which has periodic "bike route" signage to direct trail users.
The Cheektowaga Historic Rails to Trails runs between Medina St. (Cheektowaga) and Union Rd. (Buffalo).
